IC Information
Canon: Genshin Impact
Character: Ajax “Childe” Tartaglia
Canon point: Post 4.2 - After tiring himself out fighting the narwhal in the Primordial Sea, he was shipped back to Snezhnaya to recover.
Canon intensity: In-game text lore can lean darker than what the game tends to visually portray. The gameplay itself does include some violence, but tends to be lighter in tone, outside of a few intense scenes. It is not a horror setting.
World information: Genshin is a fantasy setting that incorporates magic and varying degrees of technology. Supernatural events are uncommon, but not unheard of. The violence is not usually graphic, and the game, while aimed towards teens and young adults, is easy for most people to jump into.
Character biofacts: 24, Transmasc, Human…?
About the character:
As a young child, Ajax’s father would tell him stories of a great adventurer and hero, as they sat there, waiting for fish to bite. One that he had been named after, ultimately.
His father himself had been an adventurer, before settling down with a beautiful woman in Morepesok, a Snezhnayan fishing village. They had 7 children. Ajax was the third son. The boy would often accompany his father and brothers on ice fishing trips, spending that time hearing stories from their father, from both his adventures, and those of people he’d known.
Ajax had been a very quiet, and shy child, but his eyes had grown ever bigger, the more stories he heard. And when his eldest brother was old enough to move out of the family home and forge his own stories, the idea carved itself a home in the boy’s heart.
Sometime after reaching 14, Ajax grew tired of a life without adventure— His father and older brothers had plenty of their own, why shouldn’t he? With a knife and loaf of bread in hand, the teen set out to brave the harsh Snezhnayan wilderness, wanting to make a name for himself. Running from predators that lurked behind every corner, every tree, the boy fell.
Perhaps the Abyss he’d sunk into had sensed the burning ambition in his young heart. Or perhaps he was devoured by it simply because of some awful cosmic luck.
He has never told anyone what exactly transpired. He’s not sure he ever will. Three months of his life were spent in a heightened state of frenzy, adrenaline, panic. Training, learning to harness the knowledge beaten into his young body by a swordswoman who did not once speak.
Only when he Transformed, when the Abyss recognized his ambitions, when he awakened a great beast, did she grant him her name, did she call him an eye of the storm, one who brought chaos wherever he went.
He tore himself from that hole one day, and was soon found by his sister and mother, who fussed and cried at the scars on his body, the blood around his mouth. Three days had passed, on their end, and they didn’t understand. They never would.
Ajax’s behaviour grew increasingly violent, on his return home. After more than a few instances of him attacking people, after he nearly killed his older brother for teasing their sister, his parents realized they were out of their depth. He was not their Ajax, not anymore. To them, he’d only been gone for a few days, and had returned a monster. His father signed him up for the Fatui in the hopes of his wayward son learning some discipline. That same son toppled seasoned troops with a gleeful cackle when asked to spar.
Ajax quickly rose through the ranks, earning both fame and fear on every battlefield he tred, and finally was brought before his archon, the Tsaritsa. Granted the title of Harbinger, a new name: Tartaglia. A codename: Childe.
He has not used his birth name in a long time, not openly, outside of family. He prefers Childe, it’s easier. Less hang ups. It doesn’t remind him of a home he doesn’t quite feel he belongs in, anymore. He loves his family, he does, even if his relationship with his parents is a bit strained. Even if his older brother looks at him with disdain. Childe is most proud and protective over his younger siblings, and their innocence. It stems from an internalized fear of them turning out like him, something he hasn’t quite figured out. He does as much as he can, and will even damage his reputation within the Fatui, to ensure that they aren’t exposed to how cruel the world really is. It isn’t healthy, but neither are any of his other habits.
Childe lives to fight, loves a good challenge, and when he has a cause or person to pledge himself to, he does as he is told, even when it doesn’t align with his morals. Childe was molded into being a perfect soldier, an attack dog. He isn’t picky about where his blessings and powers come from. If it is being offered, or is available to him, he will take it. He is a man who wishes to conquer the world and everything powerful in it. He has no desire, however, to rule it. He will happily lay the world at the feet of anyone he respects enough to offer his blade to. Currently this fealty lies with the Tsaritsa of his homeland.
The experience, the thrill, the addictive call of the Abyss follows Childe, urges him forth to this day. He has never stopped looking for reminders of his time in that starry hell, aching for one more fight, just one more thrill. He is not the same boy that fell, not really, but he feels alive, in these moments, the ones closest to death. There is something terribly wrong with him.
His obsession with battle and the Abyss aside, he is a prideful man, but also very caring towards his family, and towards children. He is often very friendly, and willing to cooperate with others, but he isn’t known for his patience. He desperately tries to protect the dreams of the children around him– He knows better than anyone what it’s like to have them torn away. If Childe makes a promise, he will not break it. He would destroy his own body fulfilling it before he goes back on his word. He is an honest man, or well. He tries to be. He knows he isn’t a good person.
Childe is reckless, especially with his own safety, and can have a bit of a temper, often holding onto grudges until he can settle it with a battle. He can be very petty, when he feels wronged. When things don’t go his way, he’s likely to take up arms and slash his way through the problem. This doesn’t always help, but it does make him feel better about it. Childe dislikes those who tend to scheme, having little patience for mind games. He prefers and respects a more direct approach. This does not mean he’s above manipulation and scheming himself if necessary.
Childe has a love for ice fishing, for theatre and dancing. He likes to pick up little hobbies, to keep his mind busy. He enjoys cooking, and doing housework, and writing letters home, in his spare time. He refuses to have a moment’s peace, because if he did, he might have to process any of what he went through. Childe prefers instead to frame it as the way the world is: Cutthroat and cruel. Kill or be killed. He is a weapon, and weapons are meant to be used.
Abilities:
> Proficient in the use of most weapons. He is still learning how to use a bow effectively. It’s his least favourite so far. He doesn’t have it with him.
> Able to control water and mold it into twin blades and a glaive for his use. Unreliable, his Vision doesn’t want to behave.
> Owns a Delusion, which allows him the use of electro. He uses it the way he uses hydro, by moulding the element into a handheld weapon.
> He is also able to transform into a larger, more monstrous form, called Foul Legacy. With it, he can teleport small distances, and move unnaturally quickly, and is much stronger and taller, but it comes with a great cost to his body. He needs weeks to recharge before using it again. If he uses it again before completely recovered, he is very likely to pass out and be very weak and shaky upon regaining consciousness. It takes a heavy toll on his body and mind.
Noteworthy items: His hydro vision, unreliable. His delusion, brimming with a fell light. A red mask, often found sitting at the side of his head.
